Down the Rabbit Hole…

Life has hit a high mark with regard to stress. We are selling a home and buying a home. I really want to be frugal with my home purchase. I want to spend less so that we aren’t so strained and can live a little. The one main problem is that we are moving to an area where houses generally cost an extra 10%, so our money isn’t going to go as far. The other problem is that I am such a sucker for an older home with character. It could have many major problems, and I am like, ‘but look at the cute woodwork!’

What is the appeal? I know whatever this is – it is tied in with my love of genealogy. Loving the history and the things that happened before, that’s what it’s all about. Logically, I should buy the house that has a sound foundation, a brand new roof and has been well maintained over the years. Yet, I am so torn about these older homes. If no one buys them and subsequently cares for them, then what will happen to them? Eventually, we will just start tearing them down and always building new ones. That is a very scary and sad thought to me. I am always sad to hear when a city tears down a historic building so they can save money by building new. There are a fair number of people who simply like ‘new’ better, but I am not one of them.

In the process of finding a photograph for this blog post, I came across tons of pictures of abandoned houses. There are a number of photographers who go around the country finding these houses and taking spectacular pictures. The one example I grabbed is by photographer, Brian Sansivero. Here is a link https://www.instagram.com/st.severus/ to his Instagram page. Have fun browsing his work. It IS fascinating.

If you are interested in seeing more abandoned houses, there are many video tours on YouTube, like the one listed here by Bros of Decay. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD2DbJnKu7pTLRNd0bsUopA

Pinterest is another great place to browse through tons of these pictures. I will warn you ahead of time if you love these old buildings as much as I do, going through these images on the web is a bit of a rabbit hole. Good luck and bring some carrots!
